Alumni Newsletter
March & April 2023

(c) Ida Zenna | PTS 21
Hallo Vorname,

In 2023, the alumni work at Palucca University of Dance Dresden again includes, among other projects, the Alumni Newsletter which is published on a regular basis. Thus, after successfully getting approval from DAAD for our alumni projects 2023/2024, I am very happy to be able to send you a new newsletter edition.

With this edition, I would like to cordially invite you to the alumni meeting on December 2nd 2023. The alumni meeting will be connected to a special University event. More detailed information will follow shortly.

From March 1, 2023 Professor of Ballet Timothy Couchman and Professor of Contemporary Dance Rita Aozane Bilibio start their new positions at the Palucca University of Dance Dresden. Furthermore, we welcome Mrs. Noack in the Palucca team who joined the University in December 2022.

In the coming editions, I am looking forward to introducing you to our new author, Rachel Jackson WeingĂ€rtner (alumna). In the “Health column”, which has in the meantime become a traditional feature in the newsletter, she will be taking up the topic of “psychological development in dance education”.

I am excited about this year’s upcoming projects and I look forward to receiving news from a great number of you, your ideas and thoughts - which we can then share here with others.

I hope you have fun reading.

Cordially,

Minh Huyen Pietruske

Prof. Timothy Couchman - Vice-Rector for Artistic Affairs

“I am honoured to be able to serve the Palucca University of Dance Dresden in this new function. I am looking forward to gaining a deeper understanding of the inner workings of the University which, up to now, I had on the whole taken for granted.  Many challenges await me, but I have received much support from my colleagues, most especially from my predecessor, Prof. Anke Glasow, who has contributed so much to the artistic development of the University. It is my goal to continue finding ways to inspire and challenge the pupils and students and, while doing so, help them to foster their strengths and offset their weaknesses, increase their versatility and remain true to their uniqueness.”

Prof. Rita Aozane Bilibio - Artistic Director of PTS

“To begin, I would like to thank Prof. Anke Glasow for her brilliant work as Artistic Director of the Palucca Tanz Studio (PTS) over a long period of time. As her successor, I am honoured to be able to assume the position of artistic director of PTS. I am looking forward to new and exciting challenges combined with the wish to further develop the work accomplished so far. The PTS enables students to develop themselves in a choreographic creative process and garner stage experience which is an important aspect of the education. To me, stage experience is absolutely essential - the more the better. I am sure there will be much to master and learn. I am very excited.”

Anne Noack - International Relations Office

“My name is Anne Noack and since joining the Palucca University of Dance Dresden in December 2022 I have been responsible for the affairs of the Ukrainian students. I am a trained translator for the Russian language. After my Bachelor degree in Slavic Studies (Russian) and History, I did my Masters at the University of Leipzig in Translations Studies. In addition to my activities at the Palucca University of Dance Dresden, I work as a free-lance translator. My native language is German. I speak Russian fluently, however, unfortunately not Ukrainian. In my free time, I go swimming, climbing or delve deeply into a book.”

THE LIBRARY’S NEW ACQUISITIONS

„50 Jahre Hamburg Ballett John Neumeier: Bilder einer Ära” (50 Years John Neumeier at the Hamburg Ballet: Images of an Era), Text in German and English, published by Herschel Verlag 2022, 255 pages, € 49.00

The richly illustrated and meticulously edited book is dedicated to the exceptional choreographer John Neumeier and his 50 years as artistic director of the Hamburg Ballet. With a large number of impressive photographs, some of which have never been published before, the commemorative publication has become a guide through Neumeier's impressive oeuvre which consists of about 170 works. Rather than lengthy texts, his developmental stages are briefly recalled by only a few companions and Neumeier himself.

The volume is divided into five decades. Photos from the premieres of the past five decades are juxtaposed with images of current performances. In addition, there are also images from tours and international guest stars in dance and choreography. The nearly 30-page index section lists the company’s ensemble dancers and guest dancers from A to Z, guest choreographers, artistic staff, and, of course, John Neumeier's works as well.

Massimo Gerardi’s comeback on stage together with 2 of his contemporary dance colleagues. (Production Retrospective)

© Alessandro Rizzi

Massimo Gerardi’s comeback on stage together with 2 of his contemporary dance colleagues.

In MAHATMAS, the performers and choreographers create an imaginary world that has parallels to their lives.  Inspired by the comic literature, they compare their biographies as dancers with those of the superheroes of the "Fantastic Four" saga, who in turn are based on the characteristics of the four elements earth, air, fire and water. As they age, they — the dancers/performers/superheroes — realize that their "superpowers" are no longer what they used to be and even their appearance is beginning to falter.  Although today they have a wealth of experience, their identity crises are becoming more and more obvious. The ability to use their "superpowers" and "super moves" has rather disappeared.  Nevertheless, they would do anything to maintain their image of all-rounders.
