Support Network of Dormitory & Residence Life / Pastoral Care launched

In March, the dormitory network "Support Network of Dormitory & Residence Life / Pastoral Care" was launched between the boarding schools of nine leading international ballet schools, including the Palucca University of Dance Dresden. The network aims to ensure that life in the institutions is rich, visionary for our young dancers and that they are supported through regular exchange and learning from each other to discover and fulfil their potential in a healthy way.

New timetabling and room planning software

The new timetabling and room planning software ASIMUT will soon be launched at the University to enable students and teachers to plan and present their lessons and rehearsals more effectively. For the students, this means that the previously tedious search for their own courses/lessons is no longer necessary. ASIMUT makes it possible to clearly display your own timetable via smartphone, tablet or PC. Furthermore, the software enables the students to book rooms themselves, which enables us in turn to use the rooms and studios optimally and offer many opportunities for training for final theses, auditions, etc.

The friends association Palucca e.V. sponsors a Germany Scholarship for the first time

The “Palucca e.V.” association has been supporting pupils and students attending the Palucca University of Dance Dresden since 1995 - whether it be through social assistance or the financial support of specific student (dance) projects or for supplies such as pointe shoes and slippers.

For the first time, in 2023, the Palucca e.V. also assumes the funding of a Germany Scholarship. With this, the Palucca University of Dance Dresden can offer support to a total of four talented students who either exhibit potential for excellence in their studies or career or who have already shown outstanding achievements. The scholarship holders will be granted €300.00 monthly whereby half of the scholarship is borne by the Federal government.

You can contribute to the continuation of the Germany Scholarship as well as to the increase in the funds available for sponsoring through a membership in the friends association Palucca e.V. (yearly fee of € 50.00). The ceremonial presentation of the Germany Scholarship takes place during the SoirĂše 2023, at the Semperoper Dresden on 6 July 2023.

At this year’s Easter workshop, as in the past years, the Palucca e.V. funded the winners’ monetary prizes (1st to 3rd place) as well as the two honorary prizes. The jury members were the Board of Directors Chairperson, Christina Flume, the Treasurer, Jens Engmann, Matthew Squire (University Body Awareness Coach), and Katja Erfurth (University alumna and Vice-President of the Saxon Cultural Senate).

DancerÂŽs Health Project - Anja Hauschild
Medical Doctor, Graduated stage dancer

Dr. A. Hauschild © Cathrin Eichinger

I would like to give you a brief introduction here to the Dancer’s Health Project which my team and I have been nationally engaged with since the (theatre) season 2021/22.

The Dancer’s Health Project was started by the Medical School Hamburg (MSH) in cooperation with the Performing Artists and Athlete Research Lab (PEARL) at the Codarts University Rotterdam. It was developed with the objective to improve the health and physical fitness of professional stage dancers, to identify risks for health problems and to prevent acute and chronic dance-related injuries and health problems.

The project consists of:

  1. A complete health and fitness screening at the beginning and end of the (theatre) season. (Questionnaire, dance medical check-up, 12 function and fitness tests, dance aerobic fitness test)
  2. A dancer’s weekly online self-report about work load, well-being, health problems and new injuries during the entire (theatre) season
  3. Regular feedback to the results of the screening and the weekly health monitoring.
  4. Recommendations for preventive measures (individualised as well as for the entire company).

For the weekly health monitoring we use a modified version of the Performing Artist and Athlete Health Monitor (PAHM), a web-based health surveillance system that was developed at Codarts University Rotterdam.

The project is headed by Dr. Anja Hauschild (Palucca alumna), a doctor for rehabilitation and dance medicine, and Prof. Dr. Astrid Junge, Professor for Prevention and Sport. Other members of the team are Martha Richter (Physiotherapist), Tabea Arens (BS Physiotherapy, MS Human Movement Science) and a large inter-disciplinary team of assistants during the screenings.

The following companies are currently participating in the Dancer’s Health Project: Leipziger Ballett, Ballett der Musikalischen Komödie/Oper Leipzig, Semperoper Ballett Dresden, Staatsballett Berlin, Friedrichstadt Palast Berlin, Ballett Koblenz and the LandesbĂŒhnen Sachsen dance ensemble.

“The Artistic Master Class, which I successfully completed with the Master Class examination, provided a very special enrichment in knowledge. As individual as this course of study can be, my master class exams were composed of my written thesis “Choreografie in der professionellen Tanzsausbildung“ (Choreography in the Education of Professional Dancers), my guideline “Der Guide” (The Guide) and my choreography “Portrait” for University students.“

Applications for the Artistic Master Class will be accepted at the Palucca University of Dance Dresden’s Office of Student Affairs until no later than 15 May 2023. Further information can be found on our homepage.

The introduction to developmental psychology for dance teachers

“From a dance educator's perspective, there are several aspects to consider as each student goes through different stages of development”.

Minh Huyen Pietruske,

Developmental (lifespan) psychology (DP) is the study of how people grow and develop from birth throughout their entire lifespan. It refers not only to the physical and cognitive changes which take place but also to the psychological and emotional changes that take place during different stages of life.

Lifespan development is a highly important aspect of dance teacher training, as every student will go through developmental stages at their own time, in relation to their own environmental culture.  Forcing natural development can lead to injuries, long-term health issues, and weak coordination, control and balance.

Over the upcoming Alumni Newsletter publications, I will be writing articles on the following themes:

  • Teaching the Beginnings of dance! Specializing on teaching the age range of 3 – 7
  • Teaching the Beginnings of classical ballet! Specializing on teaching the age range of 8 – 11
  • Teaching through adolescence! Specializing on the age range of 11+.

When looking at the key building blocks in DP, the first and most important steppingstones are to develop the fine and locomotor motor skills. When thinking about the definition of fine motor skills: “the ability to make movements using the small muscles in our hands and wrists”, the dance teacher needs to develop building blocks to refine the “shape of a classical ballet hand” from the very beginning, by finding playful ways of working on the softness of the fingers, on the shape of the fingers, wrist and arm line which consequently leads to head, eye and arm coordination which will be developed and further refined during the 2nd stage of development (8-11 yrs).

Similarly, the development of gross (or large) motor skills are imperative for developing a trained dancer’s body. Locomotor skills (movement through space involving a change of location) and non-locomotor skills (movement of the body in one place around its own axis) often develop naturally without training or the help of an older/adult person but as a dance teacher we need to “non-technically” develop the natural jump or a hop as these will develop into sautĂ©s and temps levĂ©s. Working on building blocks is so important as a dance teacher. I have specifically used the term “non-technical” development for developing locomotor skills – just imagine a 6- or 7-year-old (or a beginner in any age group) hasn’t developed the jump in a natural position (stretched feet, long legs), then the teaching of a sautĂ© is going to be a difficult, long and drawn-out process.  Wouldn’t it be easier being able to concentrate on only the acquisition of turn-out after previously achieving a beautiful natural jump.

These are just some basic aspects of DP in the first stage of training dance skills. Over the next few articles, I will discuss these developments and give pedagogical suggestions on how to check for eventual deficiencies but also ideas for you to develop within your own teaching career.  Investing time at the beginning can establish a sound foundation for safe development in dance.
